![]() If I want to make it public later on, I can go to settings and then scroll down toward the bottom to a section that's called danger zone and it says the repository is currently private. Notice that it's marked as private right here. And then when I click the link in the notification, I'm taken to a browser window and I see my new repository. ![]() Then I'll see a message at the bottom of the screen saying that the project is being pushed and then a notification. The commit message defaults to initial commit. After a moment, I see this dialog that asks me for an initial commit and it shows all the files that are going to be added to the first branch of the repository. I'm going to make this a private repository and share it. And if you like, you can put in a description, but you can also add that later. The remote repository, that's the one on GitHub itself, is called origin by default, but you can name it anything you want. If you don't check this option, the repository will be public and searchable for all. You can optionally set this as a private repository. This dialog will have a suggested repository name, but GitHub repositories can't have spaces in their names so I'm going to delete those and go with camel case for the title. I'll return back to Android Studio, and I've already set up my GitHub account in Android Studio so now I'll go to the menu and choose VCS, share project on GitHub. So if you have Git installed, then you're ready to share a project as a GitHub repository. On Windows, you'll see that there's actually an executable available from here and there are also links down here to get Tarballs for Linux, the Windows Installer, and a variety of GUIs for Mac. For Mac users, there's a whole variety of ways to get Git, including Homebrew, Xcode, and a binary installer that's created by one particular person. Or if you want to install directly from the GitHub website, you can go to. On Macs, you may instead see a prompt to install Xcode developer tools. ![]() ![]() To do that, go to terminal or a command window and type git -version. So you'll want to make sure that you have Git installed and that you know which version you have. Now, when you execute Git commands, you're actually using Git software that's installed on your computer outside of Android Studio. GitHub is the dominant platform for sharing open-source software. Android Studio makes it easy to share your projects as GitHub repositories. ![]()
